Have you ever noticed in movies about time travel, that a single small thing changed in the past has the ripple effect that radically changes everything? Like your parents don’t meet and then not only are you gone but somehow that causes WWIII.
There are so many things that were we to go back and change them, the world would be radically different.
But wait a minute…
There must be a million things we could do to change the future, today.
This notion that something very small happening today, like the flapping of the wings of a butterfly, can influence something very large in the future, like a distant tornado, is referred to as the Butterfly Effect.
Here’s the thing:
You and I are the butterflies.
We can act today to influence and generate a new thriving future. And, here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to be a huge action!
I know for me, when I start thinking about generating a thriving future for myself and humanity, I often get stopped. It usually looks like there is very little I can do today that will solve climate change, bring about social justice, and create an equitable financial system.
Considering the Butterfly Effect:
Every small action we take today will pay off big time in the future.
That makes it even more important that we take some action today to build a thriving future, no matter how small that action may seem.
That’s why our actions today are so important. As Lao Tzu said, “Do the difficult things while they are easy and do the great things while they are small. A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.”
Our actions today plant a seed that will grow into a grand tree. If we don’t plant the seed, the tree will never grow. The new futures we want to see will not happen without our action today.
I challenge you (and me) to answer the question:
What action will you take today to build the thriving future you desire?
